The fourth and final round of the XXXX Gold Tri-Nations Beach Cricket was held at Coolangatta Beach on the weekend (19th & 20th Jan), in front of a capacity crowd of 3000 spectators.
Australia met New Zealand in the opening match, with New Zealand electing to bat first.
The Kiwi’s set a total of 95 with Nathan Astle (19) and Chris Cairns (18) top scorers.
Michael Bevan led the run chase with a score of 27 before a mini-collapse saw the Aussies all out for 84.
New Zealand met England in the next match and the Kiwi’s set a whopping target of 126 with a half century from Astle which included 7 sixes.
England fell short despite a captain’s knock from Graham Gooch (47) which also included 7 sixes.
In the final match on Saturday England posted a score of 99, with Graeme Hick and Adam Hollioake contributing almost half the total (48) in spite of some desperate fielding by Aussie captain Alan Border,
Despite a good start by Australia, the Aussies needed 23 runs off the final over and the match ended with Stuart Law gifting an easy catch to Gladstone Small on the boundary off the bowling of Phil Defreitas.
On Sunday’s final, New Zealand claimed the title of XXXX Gold Beach cricket champions from last year’s inaugural winners. The Kiwi’s set a total of 88 with Dion Nash the top scorer (31).
Despite England’s Graeme Hick starting the run chase with two successive sixes, and Gooch’s 4 sixes and 2 fours off just two overs, they only reached a total of 63.
Back at Jacko’s Retreat, the Captain of the victorious Kiwi side, Martin Crowe said the boys were delighted to take the title.
"The highlight of the tour has been reuniting with old foes - whether it’s playing against them out on the sand or catching up over a cold beer, you can’t beat it,” he said.
Earlier in the day, Australia took on a combined team of New Zealand and England cricketing greats in a charity exhibition match. The game went right down to the final ball with Australia’s Mark Waugh smashing a six off Hollioake to win the match for the Aussies.
Allan Border said the Aussie team had decided to donate the $1,000 prize to the McGrath Foundation.
“The series has been great fun,” he said.
Andrew Coates, Director of XXXX Gold Beach Cricket added “We look forward to bringing the Series back in 2009.”
Today’s capacity crowd meant that all events in the Series were sell-outs attracting over 22,000 people to the games at Perth’s Scarborough, Adelaide’s Glenelg, Sydney’s Maroubra and the Gold Coast’s Coolangatta beaches.
