The right way to wag a lecture
September 13th 2006 04:50
Whats this? A studious person like me would NEVER give you instructions on how to skip those must attend lectures. Whats more, surely not attending the lecture is enough?
Sure, for larger classes where the lecturer doesn't recognise your face, let alone your name, but for smaller more personal classes it becomes very obvious when you don't show up. So, incase you do have a lazy day and require time out from the dreary, mundane voice of the lecturer, here are a few pointers.
1. Make an effort to see the lecturer afterwards- be it the following day, a week later or otherwise. If you appear to be genuinely concerned that you may have missed any handouts or precious information, they will be more than happy to make allowances and may actually take you for a semi-decent student.
2. Don't bother with excuses unless it is absolutely required, they don't really care- or if they do, they'll respect your privacy. If you feel the need to explain your absence, the smallest detail required is best. "I keep trying to make it to class, but my appointments keep geeting booked in the mornings!" this means there is less flaws end less chance of changing your story by accident.
3. Always make sure you have a friend in that class who will take notes and message you any important details, such as cancelled tutorials/ practicals/ examinations/ assignments etc. Missing a lecture is not an excuse fo falling behind. Also you'll need this friend to tick your name off if this particular lecture takes an attendance record (rare, but it does happen).
And lastly:
4. Make sure you dont get caught. yes this sounds very highschoolish, where one always hears about private school kids wagging in their uniforms (idiots, amatuers), but honestly, wagging uni to go get hot chips at the pub and then running into the course co-ordinator is a little awkward- trust me i know. Another friend of mine, when asked on the subject told me a rather dull, but relevant story about skipping a lecture to continue a chess game in the adjacent room- a rather foolish and obvious way to miss a class. Ofcourse he got found out.
If you have any other wagging tips, or perhaps a story to share, feel free to leave a comment.
