V8’s And Support Acts May Outshine IndyCars
October 22nd 2008 05:08
The supporting races and offtrack entertainment are set to outshine the main event at the 2008 Nikkon Indy on the Gold Coast starting tomorrow. The F1-11’s will be tearing up the sky with spectacular dump and burns over Surfers Paradise, Aussie motocross champion Robbie Maddison will soar amongst the high rises with death defying jumps and the V8’s will roar around the beachside street circuit.
The full entry list of V8 Supercars (shown below) includes Supercheap Auto Racing’s Russell Ingall, the winner on the Surfers Paradise Street Circuit in 2002.
After finishing second last year, Ingall believes he can go one better in 2008 and add another surfboard to his trophy collection. The traditional surfboard trophies are presented to the top three finishers in the V8 Supercar Event at Indy
“When I won the championship in 2005 I got a trophy that was about twenty centimetres high, whereas my surfboard from 2002 takes pride of place in my pool room,” said Ingall.
“We had a minor mechanical issue at Bathurst two weeks ago so I’m very keen to make up for it at Indy, [but] there are a lot of guys out there capable of winning, especially around the tight confines of the Indy track,” he said.
A new addition to the Indy action is freestyle motocross champion, Robbie Madison. Best known for his internationally televised world record jump on New Year’s Eve in Las Vegas, Maddison jumped his bike more than 322 feet. Maddison will be joined by Jarryd McNeil, Joel Brown, Rhys Hillier and Gold Coaster Joe Sheppard ontrack as a part of the Raceline FMX Air Show.
The Red Bull Ramps will be at various locations around the circuit. Maddison will launch from a 75 foot jump to perform moves such as ‘the heart attack’, ‘no-handed can-can’, ‘superman’ and ‘the backflip’.
“I am really psyched to be heading back to Australia and showing the fans at Indy just what Freestyle Motocross is all about,” said Maddison.
As you’d expect I’m an adrenaline junky, so I think it’s pretty cool that I get to perform on the same track as the guys in the IndyCars and V8 Supercars."
