Top 10 Beautiful Chinese Actresses (and what's wrong with them)
April 26th 2007 03:12
I've always thought that China produces some of the most beautiful actresses in the world. Recently, the world has followed my, admittedly brilliant, lead by developing their own unhealthy obsession with Gong Li and Zhang Zi Yi.
Yeah, I know. You saw Memoirs of a Geisha and were stunned by the fantastic back drops and the exotic Japanese story. You thought the story was compelling and that Gong Li played her role as a bitch perfectly.
I found it rather mediocre. Even less so. After all, I've seen Zhang and Gong play those same roles in several different movies. In fact, I'm not sure they CAN play anything other than a bitch.
Instead, there's a whole galaxy of stunning actresses, some of who are actually talented. This slideshow from the CCTV breaks it down for you, giving 10 of the most popular actresses at the moment. I found this story on YesButNoButYes, which they found from The Presurfer.
Hilariously, the comments for each actress are quite critical, lamenting the weakness of each actress' face. That knockout picture of Gong Li and her incredible cleavage was commented as:
That, I can see. Chinese people don't think she's that pretty, and neither do I. Most people accept the fact that she rose to fame by 'consorting' around with director Zhang Yi Mou.
This picture of Zhao Wei is pretty much a perfect 10. She was that super-cute girl in Shaolin Soccer, remember? Great eyes, infectious smile...
I think she's a beautiful actress, but CCTV has other thoughts:
"Zhao Wei's eyes are really beautiful. So you always worry if her contact lens will fall out of her eyes. But her face is not delicate enough. She has a big mouth, a big nose and a big face. Her teeth are not very white."
Damn, take it easy! Looks like Ms. Zhao must've pissed off someone at CCTV.
This television actress, Liu Yi Fei, is quite well known in China for acting in these popular historical dramas. I don't know her that well, and I find this photo unimpressive. Not memorable, photoshopped to pieces.
Right. That's something I've often been concerned with. Open your spiritual windows and let fly with your expressive eyes! I am your audience! Communicate with me!
I'd like to offer my own. An 11th actress, if you will, just to get that little bit extra. One of my favourite actresses from China is Maggie Cheung, who knocked the blocks off our tick-tock socks with In the Mood for Love, masterfully sluttied up Dragon Gate Inn and captivated the screen in her scenes in Days of Being Wild.

Gong Li, a traditional Chinese beauty, especially in the eyes of foreigners. In the Chinese perception, she is "average." Shortcomings; her face is a little long and her lips are a little thick.

Maggie Cheung is very pretty, but her hair is like a nest full of paper scorpions playing with matches. Her nose looks like a turnip, and she often erases audience's memories with her brainwashing ray, which she fires from her eyes, which aren't that pretty.
Her knees are ugly, too.
And we imagine her bum is lopsided.

and by photoshop I mean wrought imagery, photoshop extends beyond the software and even the god damn verb used for images and goes to everything, anything that looks too pretty or too abstracted is probably photo shopped!

Everything has to be perfect for a woman to be beautiful.
And yet if a man is fat and obese, it symbolises that they're wealthy and live a good life.
Talk about sexist.

You didn't even mention Michelle Yeoh, who's definitely one of the best Chinese actresses, the one who's entered Hollywood in the most stylish, successful way and the one that can kick your sorry ass in 2 seconds. But I guess you're only interested in how slutty / hot they are. Suit yourself.
