Titans Farewell Matt Rogers In Thrilling Win Against Tigers
September 7th 2010 02:10
Matt Rogers and the Gold Coast Titans have won their last NRL game of the regular season in a nail biting finish at Skilled Park last Friday in front of 26,000 fans. It was a fitting farewell to the former Maroons, Kangaroos and Wallabies star which secured a top four finish for the Titans. After two early tries to the Titans, Rogers got his name on the scorecard with a field goal to give the team a 13-nil lead at half time.
The Tigers roared back early in the second half when Titans playmaker Scott Prince retired hurt. A try to Chris Heighington and a break by Robbie Farrah which put Lote Tiquiri across the line, brought the score to 13-12.
When Princey returned to the field he executed a brilliant pass which had winger Kevin Gordon flying across the try line for a 19-12 lead. A dropped ball by Nathan Friend saw Gareth Ellis score a try for the Tigers in the 63rd minute and the Benji Marshall conversion brought the score back to a one point deficit.
The Titans held on though, and Princey brought the score to 21-18 with a penalty goal to seal the victory. It was déjà vu for the Tigers who lost to the Titans in their final home game last year.
The Titans will meet the New Zealand Warriors at Skilled Park this Friday for the first round of the NRL Finals. Coach John Cartwright says he hopes Preston Campbell has recovered from a hamstring tear and will start him from the reserve bench. Luke Bailey has a brace for his broken thumb and expects to take the field. He will be needed against the monster forwards of the Warriors.
