Taj Burrows Wins Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast

Aussie surfer Taj Burrows has ripped into the small swell to defeat South African newcomer Jordy Smith, and win the Quiksilver Pro at Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast today, just weeks after taking out the Burliegh Breaka Pro.
Dean Morrison (AUS) made an early exit in round three, taken out by fellow Aussie and rising star Kai Otton. Kai went on to beat Mick Fanning in round four before succumbing to Bobby Martinez (USA) in the quarter finals.
Taj Burrows became the last Aussie standing after the quarter finals when last years winner Joel Parkinson (AUS) was knocked out by Dane Reynolds (USA), as was Bede Durbidge (AUS) by Jordy Smith.
Taj went on to beat Bobby Martinez in a scrappy Semi final under deteriorating conditions.
“It’s disappointing to finish when it’s windy like this today,” Martinez said. “We all want to surf when it’s glassy, and I’m disappointed that we have to finish today.
Taj said he didn’t feel he surfed his best in the final against Jordy Smith.
“I kind of just did what it took to win. I just waited for the best waves, did a couple nice turns - nothing too wild,” he said.
“Being a bit more patient and selective than usual definitely paid off. But I knew Jordy could unleash and get the big score any moment.”
The ASP 2010 Quiksilver Pro ran for a week, interrupted only by ‘tsunami Sunday’. When the Pacific wide tsunami alert was triggered by earthquakes in Chile, the decision was made to have a lay day. It was deemed too great a risk, not for the competitors, but for the thousands of spectators lining the beach.
The next location on the 2010 ASP World Tour will be at Bells Beach for the Rip Curl Pro from May 30 through April 10, 2010.
