St George Dragons Defeat Gold Coast Titans In Round One
March 13th 2011 05:23
It was always going to be tough for the Titans coming up against last years Premiers and World Club Challenge Champions, St George, in round one of the 2011 NRL season. Almost twenty two thousand fans filed into Skilled Park, on the Gold Coast, to witness the spectacle yesterday.
The Dragons opened the scoring with tries to Nathan Fien and Ben Creagh before the Titans got on the scoreboard with a try to centre Steve Michaels just before half time. The Titans missed dual international Matt Rogers although debutante Luke Capewell was an able replacement.
Jamie Soward kicked a field goal for the Dragons early in the second half to make the score 13 to 6. When Soward chip kicked for Darius Boyd in the 55th minute, Titans fullback William Zillman appeared to have it covered until colliding with referee Phil Haines who stepped sideways into his path. Both Zillman and the ref were bowled over, along with Scott Prince, allowing Boyd to scoop up the loose ball unimpeded. Video referee Steve Clark ruled a try to the jeers of the Titans fans.
Soward combined with Boyd again in the 63rd minute, with a well placed chip kick which Boyd caught on the fly. Sowards conversion brought the score to 25 to 6.
The Titans bounced back when a grubber kick by Prince found Ashley Harrison who scored next to the posts with ten minutes remaining. A late try to the Titans Sam Tagataese restored some pride with a final score of 25 to 16.
