South African Rooibos 'Redbush' Tea

June 16th 2010 02:16
South African Rooibos Tea World Cup
With thoughts turning to South Africa for the Soccer World Cup, it's timely to feature the produce of that continent. Rooibos (pronounced roy-boss), is a hardy plant (Aspalathus linearus) native to a small region of Western Cape province in South Africa and has been used for centuries by native Khoi Khoi tribes as a medicinal beverage.

Rooibos literally means ‘red bush’ in Afrikaans, and this caffeine free tea was enjoyed by Dutch colonists as a cheaper alternative to imported black tea. It can be served with milk, but is usually served with a slice of lemon and honey or sugar. The taste is similar to black tea, without bitterness, and a slightly dusty aroma.

Red bush tea is becoming more popular in western countries for its high concentration of antioxidants. An iced tea made from rooibos has recently been introduced in South Africa and Australia as ‘Lipton Red Tea, Rooibos & Guarana’, and in the United States as ‘Snapple Red Tea, Pomegranate and Raspberry.’

The Engelbrecht family has been growing Rooibos since 1956 – a family tradition spanning over five decades. Ideally positioned, Groenkol Estate is situated near Clanwilliam in the north-west region of Western Cape Province. The Engelbrecht’s only use the finest export quality Rooibos grown on the estate for their African Dawn Estate products.

In Australia, African Dawn Rooibos tea is imported by Springbok Foods, based in Burleigh on the Gold Coast. Springbok Foods were one of over a hundred exhibitors promoting their products at the 2010 Gold Coast Good Food Show in January.
