Nimbin Mardi Grass Marijuana Reform Rally
May 3rd 2010 09:36
Once a year the sleepy northern New South Wales town of Nimbin’s population blooms for the world famous Nimbin Mardi Grass Rally. The political rally held on the first weekend in May aims to promote an end to marijuana prohibition in Australia. It also coincides with annual marijuana harvesting and is a chance for locals and visitors alike to have some harmless fun, parading down the street with a giant joint.
There were dozens of market stalls selling hippie food, clothes, art and crafts. The local aboriginals took the opportunity to promote their culture with performances of music and dance, and there were live bands of every genre performing on various sound stages. Novelty acts included the hilarious acrobatics of the Pitt Family Circus.
The Hemp Olympics featured competitive joint rolling, bong throwing, and the tug o’ peace using a hempen rope. A psychedelic double decker bus cruised into town and a Combi convoy wended its way from Byron Bay as people congregated from far and wide.
Detectives busted a home in nearby Murwullimbah on Friday, and believe the drugs were destined for sale at Nimbin during the Mardi Grass. “What started out as a routine task serving court papers has allegedly resulted in the discovery of a significant drug operation,” Inspector Shane Diehm said.
On Saturday night a reveler was rescued by police after falling into a creek and breaking his leg. NSW Police also had roadblocks on both main routes out of Nimbin on Sunday night and even on Monday, testing drivers for drugs and alcohol. In town, police foot patrols were restrained, merely confiscating alcohol being consumed in public places.
Dr Bob Melamede Phd was the special guest at this years rally. The CEO of Cannabis Science Inc. is an expert on the biology of cannabis, and how it relates to the human body.
“We at Cannabis Science are trying to make cannabis extracts available in every state in the USA, and to have the government health care programs pay for them,” Dr Melamede said.
Barrack Obama, who is known to have used the drug, is allowing State law to prevail over US Federal law on the question of medical marijuana.
The climax of the rally was a parade down the main street The people powered floats were led by the Bundjalung aboriginals, followed by dancing Ganja Faeries, the Rainbow Power Co, a giant inflatable joint and many more. The parade, and the weekend, concluded with a mass rally in Peace Park where the last word went to Dr Melamede.
“Australia has its roots in the struggle for freedom, a perfect place to seed the cannabis revolution.”
