The Roxy Quicksilver Pro began on the Gold Coast on Saturday the 23rd Feb in sweltering conditions. The opening day of 2008 ASP World Tour competition saw the ASP Top 45 take on Round 1 of the Quiksilver Pro in punchy waves at Duranbah Beach in front of a large crowd.
Highlights included the domination of Gold Coast stalwarts Mick Fanning (AUS), Joel Parkinson (AUS), Dean Morrison (AUS), Bede Durbidge (AUS) and Luke Munro (AUS). Munro, in particular, surfed brilliantly, scoring the highest wave (9.50 out of 10.00) and heat total (17.50 out of 20.00) of the round, to progress through to Round 3.
Reigning ASP and Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast champion Mick Fanning,as well as Parkinson and Morrison, are all past winners of the event.
“We’re all really lucky we get to surf here all the time and it’s just good to start off the year with a win,” Fanning said. “If you get a good start then it takes the pressure off and your confidence level goes up.”
Eight-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) won his Round 1 heat over Brazilian Rodrigo Dornelles and Tahitian wildcard Michel Bourez in the dying seconds of his heat at Duranbah.
“I don’t like to be behind with 30 seconds to go looking for a wave,” Slater said
The highest ranked surfer relegated to the sudden death Rd 2 was three times World Champ Andy Irons, who was out scored by France’s senior representative Mikael Picon.
On Sunday 24th reigning ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) was in sensational form, with an impressive 15.84 out of a possible 20 to claim a Round 1 victory in the Roxy Pro Gold Coast.
“It felt good to get back in the water,” Gilmore said. “I guess I was a bit rusty at the beginning, but I started gaining more and more confidence throughout the heat and felt pretty good by the end.”
The first two rounds of the Roxy Pro were completed on Sunday and Monday has been declared a lay day due to poor conditions.
When Roxy Pro competition resumes, Australians Samantha Cornish and Nicola Atherton will compete in the opening heat of Round 3.
When Quiksilver Pro competition resumes, Andy Irons (HAW) will be up against Tamaroa McComb (PYF) in the opening heat of the elimination Round 2 competition.
