Police Seek Horny Oyster Thieves

Police on the NSW-Queensland border are seeking public assistance after a large quantity of oysters were stolen from an oyster lease at Tweed Heads West.
Sometime between the 4th and the 26th of April, while the owners were away, seafood fanciers have stolen the shellfish from leases at Terranora Broadwater.
It’s believed the oysters, which have a potential retail value of $50,000, were removed over a number of days. They were probably taken by vessel to the foreshore and loaded onto a truck before being driven from the location.
The large-scale theft was reported to police from Tweed/Byron Local Area Command and detectives are continuing their inquiries. They’re now seeking public assistance to identify and locate the offenders.
Anyone who witnessed the theft or any suspicious activity in the vicinity of Terranora Broadwater last month is urged to contact Tweed Heads Police Station via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
In a further blow, Tweed Shire Council have banned oyster harvesting in Terranora Inlet for three weeks because of a burst wastewater pipe.
A Council spokesman said the ban only applies to the four oyster leases at Terranora and was only a precautionary measure.
“Contamination levels were quite low,” he said.
