Plastic Sheet Delivers Wireless Power

May 9th 2007 18:16
This is basically what I've been waiting for - for years. People aren't that interested, but it's got the potential to change our lives.

From Nature, Japanese scientists have cleverly implemented a method of delivering wireless power.

It's in experimental stages, but they're able to power an LED, as shown in the post, or a small laptop. The idea is brilliant: you lay down this plastic sheet on your desk, which is plugged into the outlet. Devices on your desk receive power by being in near proximity to the sheet.

As the technology matures, it has great potential.

Why?

I'll tell you why: right now, you can buy beautiful plasma TVs with nice flat screens. Great! The only problem is, you've still got to run a cable to power it. Sure, you can recess it into the wall, or figure out some other way of hiding the cable, but, essentially, that TV is tied to the wall socket.

With the new technology, that all changes. You've got a plasma -with no cables of any sort - and you hand it on the wall. Your wall is now carrying the power and delivers it to the TV wirelessly. Move the TV into another room just by picking it up and hanging it on a different wall.

Your desk will be free of all the cables for your computer, too. Place a laptop on your desk, let it charge. Run your clock from the wireless power. It's beautiful.

It's here.

Let's get one.

I too have always thought how cool it would be to transmit power wirelessly. I'm tired of changing batteries!
