Pink Ladies, Bundjalung Elders And Buddhist Monks Bless New Dragonboats
November 9th 2009 09:15
The Pink Ladies of Currumbin Dragon Boat club yesterday celebrated the addition of two new boats, with a blessing of the boats ceremony at Currumbin Creek.
Breast cancer survivors one and all, the Pink Ladies and their supporters gathered with members of the indigenous Bundjalung tribe, the Deputy Mayor, and a deputation of Buddhist monks to formally launch the vessels.
Bundjalung elder Aunty Cath welcomed one and all on behalf of the traditional landholders before a spirited song and dance performance by the men.
The Deputy Mayor Daphne McDonald added her support and encouragement, as did a representative from Maritmo, the major sponsor.
Following a free morning tea, the Monks blessed the boats and ceremonially dotted the eyes of the dragons heads mounted on the prows.
An impromptu exhibition race was held in which neighbouring club Arakuna were soundly beaten.
Along with the camaraderie and excitement of racing, paddling a dragon boat is therapeutic following breast surgery and helps in the circulation of lymphatic fluid.
Curious onlookers and new paddlers are always welcome at various venues, on the Gold Coast, or Australia wide and can be contacted through The Dragons Abreast Australia website.
