Queensland Congratulates Olympic Athletes & Gold Medalists

Australia’s Olympic heroes were honoured yesterday with a parade through Brisbane’s CBD followed by a meet and greet with thousands of adoring fans. Stephanie Rice and her gold medal winning relay team, triathlete Emma Snowsill and diminutive diver Melissa Wu all won wide acclaim from young an old alike.
Everyone saw Gold Coaster Sally McClellan as she posed for photos and signed countless autographs. Sally won many Australians hearts with her post race interview after winning a silver medal in the women’s hurdles. Sally, you had me at “Oh, shit…”
The entire girl’s water polo team gracefully received the peoples accolades along with our softball team, cyclists, rowers and kayakers. Even our medal winning sailors came to say hello.
Crazy BMX biker Kamakazi said he was stoked that BMX was included in the Olympics for the first time in Beijing.
“Now that BMX is an Olympic sport competitors can rise to the highest level without drifting into road racing or track,” he said.
Notably absent to his grass roots fans was swim team captain Grant Hackett, a man of Queensland origin. As a student on the Gold Coast I used to cook his fish and chips, but when I qualified as a journalist I couldn’t get past his media minder for an interview. Come on Grant…Please give me an interview! He is not the same since he moved to Melbourne.
The ceremony was also attended by Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman and Queenslands latest minister for everything, Judy Spence. Captain Bligh’s first mate was wearing a swashbuckling outfit and said it was a good day to be sports Minister.
“If Queensland was a country we would have come sixth in the medal tally,” she declared. Could there be mutiny in the wind?
