Australia Zoo - The Best Zoo In Oz?
April 20th 2010 07:08
In my opinion Australia Zoo is one of the best in the country. While Healesvile Sanctuary does important research, Fleays Fauna Centre has successful breeding programs, Currumbin Sanctuary has free flying birds, Alma Park Zoo is very interactive, Adelaide Zoo has rare, exotic animals, Western Plains Zoo has wide open spaces and Taronga Zoo has a huge variety, Australia Zoo has a combination of all these attributes as well as the charismatic Irwin family.
In particular the reptile collection is impressive, with 22 ‘saltwater’ Estuarine Crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus), some of which perform in the Crocoseum. The zoo also houses numerous ‘freshwater’ Johnston’s Crocodiles (Crocodylus johnstoni) as well as North American Alligators (Alligator mississipiensis). Other large reptiles include a sleepy Komodo Dragon, two huge Aldabran Tortoises and a beautifully patterned pair of Perenties, Australia’s largest lizard.
A comprehensive list of Australian snake species are represented including the Fierce Snake, Tiger Snake, Brown Snake, Collettes Snake, Copperhead, Taipan, Woma, Amethystine Python, Green Tree Python, Black Headed Python, Red Bellied Black Snake and more.
Australia Zoo has plenty of koalas posing for photos, as well as friendly kangaroos and tame wallabies that visitors can feed and pat. Other marsupials include slothful wombats, and cheeky Tasmanian devils. Of the egg laying monotremes, there are Echidna but no Platypus.
Besides the jabirus, cockatoos and lorikeets that take part in the wildlife show, there is a walk in rainforest aviary housing dozens of brightly coloured birds. Watch out for Australia’s two large flightless birds, the Emu and the Cassowary, as well as Australia’s largest bird of prey, the Wedge Tailed Eagle.
Exotic Asian animals include elephants, tigers, red pandas, and giant pythons. Australia Zoo is still growing and is currently establishing an African savannah section. When completed the African section will feature species such as Cheetah, Giraffe and Rhinoceros.
Australia Zoo has a worldwide profile thanks to the Irwins, and will surely go on to even greater success.
