Nimbin Mardi Grass Marijuana Reform Rally

There are dozens of market stalls selling hippie food, clothes, art and crafts. The local aboriginals take the opportunity to promote their culture with performances of music and dance, and there are live bands of every genre performing on various sound stages.
The Hemp Olympics features competitive joint rolling, bong throwing, and the tug o’ peace using a hempen rope. A psychedelic double decker bus cruises into town and a Combi convoy will wind its way from Byron Bay as people congregate from far and wide.
Last year detectives busted a home in nearby Murwullimbah on Friday, and believe the drugs were destined for sale at Nimbin during the Mardi Grass. “What started out as a routine task serving court papers resulted in the discovery of a significant drug operation,” Inspector Shane Diehm said.
NSW Police also had roadblocks on both main routes out of Nimbin on Sunday night and even on Monday, testing drivers for drugs and alcohol. In town, police foot patrols were restrained, merely confiscating alcohol being consumed in public places.

Barrack Obama, who is known to have used the drug, is allowing State law to prevail over US Federal law on the question of medical marijuana.
The climax of the annual rally is a parade down the main street The people powered floats are led by the Bundjalung aboriginals, followed by dancing Ganja Faeries, the Rainbow Power Co, a giant inflatable joint and many more. The parade, and the weekend, conclude with a mass rally in Peace Park.
