Australian rugby sevens captain scores try
Australian Sevens Captain Ed Jenkins Scores
Round one of the HSBC Rugby Sevens World Series was held at Skilled Park on the Gold Coast this weekend attracting around 30,000 spectators from far and wide. On Friday four pools of four international teams slugged it out to top their pool and make the finals on day two of the competition.

Rugby sevens differs from rugby union in that there are only seven players per side and the game consists of two ten minute halves. It makes for an action packed game with plenty of tries and few stoppages.

Australia got points on the board with wins against Japan and USA before being defeated by South Africa, leaving the Aussies second in their pool behind South Africa at the end of day one.

The crowd were encouraged to dress in outlandish costumes in an attempt to win a trip to the Hong Kong Sevens in March 2012. There were large groups of superheroes, green fairies, Austrians in lederhosen, cops in speedos, flight attendants, Arab Sheiks and Maoris in dresses, all adding an exotic element to the excitement of the game.
Day two saw Australia narrowly take out Samoa 14 points to twelve before emphatic defeats at the hands of New Zealand and South Africa (again). Giant killers Fiji defeated South Africa 24 to 7, to meet New Zealand in the final.

New Zealands dominance withered in the face of the Fijians final onslaught. Fiji scored a try in the first minute. New Zealand responded with two tries of their own to take the lead 12 points to 7. After half time it was all Fiji, scoring three unanswered tries. New Zealand did not score in the second half and the Fijians even had time for an unsuccessful attempt at a drop goal as the clock counted down the closing seconds. Fiji won the round one final of the Sevens Series 26 to 12. For full results click here.

Round two of the Sevens Series will be held in Dubai in early December, followed by subsequent rounds in South Africa, New Zealand, USA, Hong Kong, Japan, Scotland and England. Skilled Park will host the Rugby League Indigenous All Stars when they meet the NRL All Stars on February 4th 2012.
