January 18th 2011 05:23
Nestled in a little lane behind the Beach Hotel in Byron Bay, Fishmongers Café is like a breath of fresh sea air. Calamari and chips with tartare sauce or calamari and salad are available for $12.50. The thick cut calamari rings are tender and the chips are great. Soggy chips often let down a feed of seafood but ‘Mongers chunky hand cut chips are crunchy on the outside and fluffy in the middle.
The ‘Mongers mixed box contains two pieces of crisp battered, crumbed or grilled fish and six calamari rings with chips topped with fried sweet potato shavings for $17. Daily specials such as tuna with chilli and tomato salsa, barbequed octopus salad or wasabi marinated snapper are spicy and delicious, and freshly shucked Sydney rock oysters are available for $24 a dozen.
Located in Bay Lane, Byron Bay, Fishmongers Café is open seven days a week from midday to 9pm. Bookings are not available so it is first come first served. Established by Heather and Dave Ferguson in 1999, and with new franchises in Bondi and Manly, Mongers offers restaurant quality seafood indoors or alfresco, as well as takeaway served in unbleached cardboard boxes.
