Micro-generator powered by vibrations
July 6th 2007 00:51
Researchers from the UK have developed a micro-generator, about the size of a sugar cube, that is powered solely by vibrations.
It's a brilliant idea, and one that has numerous applications.
Vibrating the unit causes a magnet to wobble, with generates electric power. The power can be stored in batteries and used for powering small devices. Brilliant!
The article mentions how it might be useful in bridges and buildings, which usually experience sizable vibrations - a terrific idea. Imagine a bridge lined with thousands of these generators, powering the lights and electronics used by the bridge. By running on vibration, the vibrations get damped along the bridge, limiting the deleterious effects on the structural integrity.
Hella-good.
In fact, make a huge one of these and stick it in the fault lines. When an earthquake hits, at least you can suck up some of that energy.
I'm tremendously pleased to see innovative ideas being used to transfer power from natural sources around us. This concept can be used -and is already used- for many commercial applications, reducing our dependency on oil.
