Live Earth produces 74 500 tons of CO2

July 9th 2007 02:35
Live Earth produces a lotta greenhouse gases.

It's a concert for the Earth! The Earth is alive! Heyyyyyyaaaaaah! A-booga-booga-booga!

Wait, let's be serious for a second. What greater tribute to the dark lords of Rock n Roll than a rock concert about the environment? Sex, drugs, rock 'n' roll - and conscious energy management.

Who could possibly resist the compelling siren call of Madonna, as she extends her silk-clothed hand towards us, the plebs, to please turn off the lights when you leave a room? The Power of God compels you!

Nevermind that Madonna is rumoured to have an annual carbon footprint of 1 018 tons, 'about 92 times the 11 tons an average person uses per year'. After all, most of that goes into maintaining her fab-u-lous English mansion and her fake English accent. Pah-don?

In addition to Al Gore and Penelope Cruz hawking green messages, the Beastie Boys showed up to tell us to fight for our right. To paaaaaar-tay!

From the article:

"John Buckley of Carbon Footprint, an organization that helps companies reduce their carbon dioxide emissions, said Saturday that Live Earth will produce about 74,500 tons of the gas.

"We would have to plant 100,000 trees to offset the effect of Live Earth," he said, speaking by telephone. But, he added, "if you can reach 2 billion people and raise awareness, that's pretty fantastic.""

Hold on, hold on. It's all evened out. Remember, there are organic T-shirts on sale here. They're only $40!

Woo hoo! $40! Organic! They're woven out of a mixture of crushed cardamom seeds and corn husks. Sure, they had to be shipped all over, but the important thing is the word: organic.

I have organs. So do you. Don't be a fool. Only clothe your organ-holding meat sac in the finest in $40 organic T-shirts.

So overall; we've evened out all the emissions we just produced by the concert from the proceeds going back to reducing the damage the concert did. It's just a concert for concerts sake both figuratively and literally!
Still, awareness and having fun factors are important too.

Oh thank you Cibby thank you!!!
I'm so glad I am not the only one who can see the hypocrisy at play here.
I wrote a small post about this on my other blog.

A series of concerts to raise awareness of global warming?

...it's like ordering a vegetarian pizza with ham...

I was under the impression that they were carbon neutral; using generators or something to power the concerts. Just something I briefly heard, don't have too many details about it.

Though Mr M did hear that in the US the Prius is a big seller but because they are cheaper to run and more environmentally friendly, people are actually driving more than before.....hence canceling out any good they would have done. Interesting.

Love & stuff

Mrs M, yeah that's an important factor... if cars are cheaper to run, people will drive more.

justin, I'm all for awareness, and it's well-meaning, but if the overall effect is counter-productive, what's the point?

duski, what's the link? Also, where can I get these vegetarian pizzas with ham?

Cib,

I remember doing a post on this question a while back, and apart from not raising anything but a dopey hazy kind of awareness of something to do with the environment, I have to agree that tree-planting gatherings would do more than these concerts.

Good Post!

Hiya Cib

Just to set the spanner in the works here... but there are so many concerts going on every day in every part of the world... was this series that much more of an impact?

At least these concerts are raising awareness. I have come across a few people today who have spoken about the environment and how they have been thinking about their impact on the earth... and all of them referenced 'Live Earth' .

Who knows if they will change their ways but with the money that has been raised surely it give the right people the means to setting in motion a chain of events that will start the change... and if a million of those 2 billion change their views... surely in the long run the effects will be a noticeable change and worth it?

hmm not that i necessarily disagree with the points of view expressed here but i would like to make a counterpoint.

i agree with the sentiment that if these concerts raise awareness than ultimately it may be a positive thing. however, i believe a lot of the criticism to live earth, especially from america, can be directly attributed from the possibility that al gore was the instigator of the movement.

he cops too much crap from the corporate media who never point out the hypocrisy of conservatives.

Isn't it Ironic. I agree with Lilla - they should have tree-planting events not big concerts. Didn't bother to watch.

Great post Cibby!

lilla, the only problem is that tree-planing would never get a big crowd...

ash, I know what you're saying, and sure, holding awareness concerts is better than nothing at all. What I'm against is the blind vision of people attending the concert, not thinking about the effects of the campaign.

After all, several of the acts took private planes, rode around in entourages, etc... certainly that's not in the spirit, is it?

And I'm strongly against artists cashing in on the hot topic of the day, painting themselves green because it'll make them more popular.

stan, yeah, these were backed by Gore, so naturally there would be backlash.

Trina, I didn't bother to watch either...

Hi Cibby..I watched part of it but to be honest, the few acts I saw were...not good. Perhaps it was just the time I tuned in, but--yeccchhh. The thought of all the CO2 emissions crossed my mind as well, so I turned off the TV...

Did you see the amount of rubbish left behind from the patron who attended these 'keep the environment clean' concerts - environmentalists my ass! They just wanted to see the vixen Mad's and hear the music IMHO

D, Nat, yeah, for the kids, it's only about the music, anyway.
