NSW Premier Kristina Keneally has declared a natural disaster on North Coast after a tornado ripped through Lennox Head last yesterday. More than 30 homes were damaged, with 10 of them sustaining severe damage. Caravans and mobile homes were overturned in the winds, which raged in excess of 150km/h - bringing down trees and power lines.
“Two people required hospital treatment, but we remain thankful that no one lost their lives or was more seriously injured when this tornado hit Lennox Head yesterday morning,” Premier Keneally said.
“Community Services moved quickly to set up an evacuation centre and last night had organised emergency accommodation for about 20 residents whose homes were uninhabitable,” she said.
“The State Emergency Service, Rural Fire Service, NSW Fire Brigades and NSW Police, along with Ballina Shire Council staff and Country Energy crews, have made us proud with their efforts.”
“I want to thank all those who have put in such a huge effort, including the Red Cross, Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul, Anglicare and ADRA personnel on hand to assist residents at the evacuation centre, for their commitment and hard work.”
Ballina and Byron Shires will now be given financial assistance to help with the cost of repairs to roads and other public infrastructure damaged by heavy rains. The State Emergency Service have received 93 calls for assistance to date.
SES Commissioner Murray Kear yesterday issued emergency orders to expedite the clean-up operation, ensuring the councils were able to call on additional resources to clear fallen trees, roofing and other debris off the streets before more forecast rain in coming days. He urges people to beware of flood waters which can be fatal.
Community Services is also providing assistance for low-income earners who are uninsured and whose homes have been damaged. This assistance helps with the cost of replacing essential household items and structural repairs.
