Kiwis Defeat Australia In Four Nations Rugby League Final
November 14th 2010 06:14
New Zealand has snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in the Four Nations Rugby League Final on Saturday night at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.
Brent Tate opened the scoring with a try from a Lockyer grubber kick in the opening minutes of the game. Tate has been in scintillating form during the series and seems to grow an extra leg for representative matches.
New Zealand leveled the scores in the 36th minute when Shaun Kenny Dowall scored off a dubious Benji Marshall pass.
Tigers and New Zealand Captain Benji Marshall’s conversion kick leveled the score; 6 all at half time.
As the siren sounded tensions boiled over, with a bit of biffo between David Shillington and Kiwi Adam Blair, but happily referee Archer sent them to the dressing rooms to cool off with no more than a caution.
Australia regained the lead in the 58th minute when Paul Gallen and Titans Greg Bird combined to link with speedster Billy Slater.
New Zealand hit back in the 71st minute with a try to Jason Nightingale, but Benji Marshall’s conversion hit the post and bounced out to leave the Kiwis with a two point deficit.
The Aussies may have eased off with a two point lead late in the game, but with a minute to go Nightingale made a break down the sideline, passing a speculator which found Benji Marshall.
Arrested just short of the try line, Marshall flicked the ball backwards into the path of former Queenslander Nathan Fien, who crossed the line to win the game for the Kiwis 16 points to 12.
