IBM develops record-breaking petaflop computer; still has trouble running Oblivion
July 5th 2007 02:47
Researchers at IBM broke the petaflop barrier today, announcing the creation of a parallel supercomputer that could process 3 petaflops.
A petaflop is a measure of computing power... the 'flops' part stands for 'floating-point operations per seconds', which is a fancy way of saying 'a calculation', like 12.3 x 18.7.
A petaflop, then, using SI units, is:
...calculations per second. A lot, eh?
Called Blue Gene/P, the computer is the fastest thang around town, Charlie Brown. Yet, when running Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, researchers still had trouble playing at acceptable frame rates.
'Naturally, it was fast, but we still couldn't turn all the shadow effects on,' one of the researchers was quoted. 'But we put the view distance at maximum and Blue Gene got pretty warm after that!'
