Gold Coast Titans Score Second Win
April 16th 2011 05:22
The Gold Coast Titans notched up their second win of the season by defeating the Wests Tigers 20 to 14 in a thriller at Skilled Park yesterday in front of just over 17 thousand fans. The Tigers came out blazing, with Simon Dwyer scoring their first try after just four minutes.
Basic mistakes by the Titans, and the referee penalising the slightest infringement, led to a 6-1 penalty count in favour of the Tigers. Chris Heighington scored another try for the tigers and Benji Marshall kicked a penalty goal to give the Tigers a commanding 14-nil lead.
Once the Titans received a few penalties the momentum shifted dramatically, allowing William Zillman to cross the try line twice in the space of a few minutes. However, Scott Prince missed both conversions, resulting in a 14-8 half time score. Heighington was put on report late in the first half for a swinging arm on Titans utility Greg Bird.
The Tigers failed to post points in a disappointing second half, and when Scott Prince scored a solo try under the posts in the 73rd minute, the scores were level at 14 all.
With a minute to full time it appeared the game might go into golden point extra time again for the Titans, when Nathan Friend, who is bound for Auckland next season, put Mark Minichiello across the line. Princes conversion after the siren resulted in a 20 to 14 win in the nick of time.
The Tigers have not fared well at Skilled Park, defeated 21-18 in the last round of 2010, and 36-24 in the final round of the 2009 NRL season.
