Gold Coast Indy Revs Up
October 20th 2010 02:05
Yesterday was a busy day for competitors in the Armor All Gold Coast 600 ahead of Friday’s qualifying races. Each day of the October 22-24 event will see 18 international motor racing stars paired with the 29 home-grown drivers of the Aussie V8 Supercars. The skills of some of the best drivers in the world will be put to the test by the V8 Supercars taking to the concrete jungle of the Gold Coast street circuit
The day started early for some, with appearances on popular morning program Sunrise which was broadcasting live from pit lane. Then it was off to Kurrawa Surf Club in Broadbeach, where many participated in the Miss V8 Supercars beach volleyball challenge.
TeamVodafone drivers Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes unveiled their special Gold Coast car livery, helmet and suit designs. The drivers of Ford Performance Racing also visited the Red Cross Blood Donor Centre in Southport and the Gold Coast Children’s Ward.
All 18 of the international drivers and an assortment of the V8 Supercar heroes headed to Palazzo Versace in the evening for the Armor All Gold Coast 600 official welcome reception, with Miss V8 Supercars contestants, event management, VIPs and invited guests also in attendance.
TeamVodafone driver Jamie Whincup said it had been a massive day and a great way to get into the spirit for the Armor All Gold Coast 600.
“The Gold Coast event has well and truly started,” said Whincup.
“It’s my home event, so I get to stay at home and ride the motorbike in each day.” he said.
“This event sees us trying to find a fine line between lapping up the atmosphere and having a good time, and concentrating on my job – it’s always a hard balance.”
“As far as the racing goes, we have to have confidence from the Bathurst one-two and I’m confident the cars will be quick; we’ve just got to make sure we’re there at the end, and that’s going to come down to Craig and I making sure we keep it off the walls!”
Former Formula One World Champion Jacques Villeneuve, who will drive with Bottle-O Racing's Paul Dumbrell on the Gold Coast, believes that sitting on the opposite side of the car will be an unusual experience.
“Sitting on the wrong side of the car and using my left hand to shift is going to be very different, that's something that is a bit of a worry and a stress but it should be fun, they're big fast powerful cars - a bit like a NASCAR basically,” Villeneuve said.
“As a driver you always want to search for your limits but at this place you can't afford to find your limits because you'll find yourself in the wall,” he said.
“It makes it a little bit more difficult but also makes it more exciting for us drivers and for the fans,” he said.
When the checkered flag has flown at the end of each day, 600 Sounds presented by Hard Rock will fire up each night at the Broadwater Parklands entertainment precinct, bringing together a wide range of musical acts across a whole range of genres including the Potbelleez, The Beach Boys and Sneaky Sound System.
Tickets are now on sale through Ticketek, with Friday admission tickets starting from just $49 and three day passes from just $136. Each ticket provides admission to not only the day’s racing but also the same night’s entertainment line-up.
