Gold Coast Airport Marathon 2011
July 4th 2011 08:54
Almost 5000 competitors attempted the Gold Coast Airport Marathon's 42 kilometre course from Surfers to Coolangatta airport and back, or the half marathon, 10 km Run, 5 km Challenge or the Junior Dash.
Kenyan Nicholas Manza won the Marathon in a time of 2 hours, 10 minutes and 1 second. Manza beat the 22 year old record set by Brad Camp in 1989 by 10 seconds.
Ethiopian Goitetom Tesema was the first woman across the line in a time of 2 hours, 30 minutes and 8 seconds.
The Gold Coast Airport Marathon attracts athletes from around the world and across the country, and it is events like this, and the Blues On Broadbeach festival, Cooly Rocks On and the V8 SuperCarnivale that inject millions of dollars into the Gold Coast economy.
Not everybody took themselves seriously, with some competitors in thongs, wigs, clown costumes and superhero outfits, and even one man carrying a tuba.
I didn’t get up early enough to join the race and I found it exhausting just watching it. Maybe next year…
