Dragon Boats Capsize At Ballina – 40 People Rescued
February 5th 2010 13:05
Surf rescue crews helped more than 40 crew members of two dragon boats which capsized in the Ballina Seaway in northern NSW, yesterday. The accident occurred just after 5am, when rough conditions in the Ballina Seaway overturned the two boats. There were fears for five people who were believed to have been swept away by the tide. However, Ballina police said they have since been found, and all crew members were safe and well.
Dragon boat racing has recently been identified as the fastest growing water sport in Australia. Dragon boats contain a crew of up to 22 paddlers, a sweep and sometimes, a drummer.
Many breast cancer survivors take up dragon boat paddling for fun, fitness and camaraderie. It is not all fun and games though; the exercise stimulates lymphatic circulation in women who have had the lymph nodes surgically removed.
Curious onlookers and new paddlers are always welcome at various clubs, on the Gold Coast, or Australia wide and can be contacted through the Dragons Abreast Australia website.
