Close Up Photos Of Eyjafallajokull Volcano Erupting

Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano, which has caused enormous disruption to air travel since it began erupting a week ago, is slowing down. Ash emissions are slowing down and aircraft are taking to the European skies again.
Iceland has 35 volcanoes that have erupted in the last 10,000 years, 18 of which have erupted since human settlement in 874 AD.
Incidentally, Iceland boasts the world’s oldest active Parliament, as the Vikings were instrumental in spreading Parliamentary Democracy to their realms, including England.
The land of fire and ice is one of the most geologically active in the world, astride the boundary between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates.
Most volcanic activity is concentrated along the plate boundary, which runs across the island from the south-west to the north-east.
Not since the Chilean Llaima volcanic eruption of January 2008 has nature put on such an awe inspiring spectacle.
