Blues On Broadbeach Free Music Festival
May 29th 2011 12:45
The Blues on Broadbeach Festival finished tonight, concluding four days of free entertainment from a stellar line up of musicians performing on various open air stages throughout Broadbeach and in the pubs and restaurants.
Artists included Phil Manning, Kevin Borich Express, The Mason Rack Band, the Adam Hole and Marji Curran Band, the Wily Reed Trio and Chase The Sun, in a program too big to list in full.
Last night Blind Lemon played the Beach Hotel and Bondi Cigars played the Envy Hotel, while the legendary Phil Emmanuel wowed the crowd on the main stage in the middle of the normally busy Surf Parade.
His show began with a unique instrumental number and featured numerous covers including a sweet version of Dire Straits’ ‘Water of love’ and a butchered version of Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Little wing ’as Mr Emmanuel appeared to be having a technical problem.
The multitude of restaurants in the heart of Broadbeach were doing a roaring trade, serving up the soul food to patrons packing every vantage point. Those on the pavement dining areas were able to have a drink while they enjoyed the entertainment, but those on the street were reminded by large signs that “Normal no drinking in public laws apply”
Now in its tenth year, Blues On Broadbeach has attracted over 360 thousand people since it began in 2002. Broadbeach Alliance CEO Jan McCormick said the festival attracts more and more fans every year.
“This event is one of the largest free music festivals in the world,” she said.
