Australian Native Wildlife - Fire Tailed Skink
December 12th 2008 06:27
Australian lizards are divided into 5 categories: dragons (Agamidae), monitors (Varanidae), skinks (Scincidae), geckos (Geckonidae) and legless lizards (Pygopodidae). The Scincidae Family contains more species than any other in the world and there are over thirty species of skinks living in a variety of Gold Coast environments.
Skinks range from large terrestrial lizards to slender insectivores and secretive burrowing skinks that are seldom seen above ground. The Fire Tailed Skink (Morethia taeniopleura) grows to 10cm in total length.
It is brown on top with a black and a white stripe down the sides, a white underbelly and a red tail. The red blush spreads towards the hips with age and mature males have a reddish patch on the throat which is used for courtship displays.
The Fire Tailed Skink inhabits the outer suburbs of Brisbane and Gold Coast and the Moreton Bay Islands. It is a swift moving lizard feeds on insects and invertebrates in open forest, woodlands and suburbia.
