A-League Finals: Newcastle Defeat Gold Coast 6-5 In Penalty Shoot Out
February 20th 2010 16:06
The Newcastle Jets have defeated Gold Coast United in a penalty shoot out tonight at Skilled Park. Sixth placed Newcastle took on third placed Gold Coast in the first final of the A-League season.
Ninety minutes of play could not separate the two teams, though Gold Coast had their chances. Some adroit goalkeeping by Newcastle’s Ben Kennedy kept the Gold Coast out.
Finals matches cannot end in a draw so the match went into extra time. After a further 15 minutes each way, neither side could convert their opportunities to score.
In the penalty shoot out both teams had scored four times before Newcastle missed. Incredibly, Gold Coast missed their next penalty too. After another goal each, Gold Coast missed again, and Newcastle goaled to make the final score six goals to five.
Gold Coast’s season is over now but they can be proud of finishing third in the regular season and making the finals in their first year in the A-League.
